Wer darf bieten?

Beschreibung

European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH (European XFEL) is a non-profit limited liability company under German law. It operates the world’s largest X-ray laser, a 3.4-kilometre-long facility from the DESY campus in Hamburg to Schenefeld in Schleswig-Holstein. The laser generates ultrashort X-ray flashes 27,000 times per second, with a peak brilliance a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray sources.

The European XFEL is announcing a tender for the development and supply of superconducting undulator (SCU) modules as part of an afterburner project for the Hard X-ray line SASE2. This project will comprise a small series of SCU modules, with one module retained for measurement-system improvements and as a spare. The modules are designed to produce X-ray lasing at photon energies of ≥ 25 keV while operating at an electron beam energy of 16.5 GeV.

Beschreibung des Loses

Scope of Work After Award: The tender covers the following components and requirements: Superconducting Undulator Modules: Composition: Small series of five with an option of sixth SCU module, each approximately 5 meters long. Installation: The SCU modules will be positioned after the existing 35 permanent magnet undulator modules of the SASE2 line at European XFEL Technical design report: A Technical Design Report (TDR) for one representative SCU module must be provided after award to EuXFEL for review and approval Tests: An intermediate test of all the SCU magnets in a liquid-helium (LHe) vertical cryostat at DESY (SUNDAE1), carried out under the responsibility of EuXFEL, is foreseen to train and characterize the magnetic field. The acceptance tests of each SCU module include: factory acceptance test (FAT) and three site acceptance tests: the first SAT which includes magnetic characterization, SAT2 in the tunnel without beam and SAT3 in tunnel with beam. Timeline: The fifth SCU module must be delivered latest by June 2032, and the sixth optional SCU module, if the option is exercised, latest by June 2033. Technical Specifications include: Magnetic Configuration: Each SCU module consists of two 2 m long SCU magnets, each with: Vacuum stay-clear: 5 mm Period: 18 mm Peak magnetic field: ≥ 1.82 T The root mean square of the relative variation of the undulator parameter defined over half period must be smaller than 0.004 The range of the relative variation of the undulator parameter defined over half period must be smaller than 0.012 Shimming coils must be applied in case the undulator parameters mentioned above are not reached in the measurement in SUNDAE1: root mean square of the relative variation of the undulator parameter defined over half period larger than 0.004 and /or the range of the relative variation of the undulator parameter defined over half period larger than 0.012.

Components: - A cryostat for thermal isolation consisting of a vessel and several thermal shields. - An electron beam vacuum chamber (EBC) with the following functions: separating the isolation vacuum, where the superconducting magnets are located, from the ultra high vacuum where the electron beam moves, shielding the superconducting magnets from beam heat load. - Two SCU magnets, each consisting of a top and bottom coil held together by a support structure, equipped with correction coils. - Horizontal and vertical Helmholtz coils at the exit of the upstream SCU magnet and at the entrance of the downstream SCU magnet. - A phase shifter to manage phase mismatch between the two SCU magnets. A support structure holding together the Helmholtz coils and the phase shifter. This support structure and the ones of the SCU magnets must keep the superconducting magnets at the final gap and have to be designed and manufactured to fit in the magnetic gap precisely machined rails to guide a sledge with Hall probes. The sledge with Hall probes will be provided by EuXFEL. This is needed to perform the test in SUNDAE1 mentioned above.

The contract will provide for a firm obligation to supply five (5) SCU modules. In addition, the contract will include an option entitling EuXFEL, at its sole discretion, to order one (1) additional (sixth) SCU module with the same technical specifications and on the same contractual terms. The option shall lapse if EuXFEL does not exercise it by the end of July 2029. EuXFEL is under no obligation to exercise the option.

Further details will be set out in the procurement documents, including the complete technical specification, which will be provided to the selected candidates following completion of the selection stage and submission of the confidentiality agreement.
